Words that end the same way rhyme. Swap just the first sound to make a whole family: cat, hat, mat, sat.
What is a word family?
A word family is a group of words that share the same ending chunk — called the rime — like -at in cat, hat, and mat. The sound you change at the front is the onset. Because the family shares an ending, the words all rhyme, and a child who can read one can often read the rest.
How to use this tool
- Pick a family — choose a rime like -at or -op. The ending stays on the stage.
- Tap a first sound — the onset snaps in front of the rime to spell a whole word, and the word is read aloud (a matching picture appears when we have one).
- Watch the family grow — every real word you make joins the family list, so the pattern is easy to see and say.
- Clear list or Next family — start fresh, or move on to a brand-new rime.
Why it helps
Word families turn reading into pattern-spotting. Instead of sounding out every word letter by letter, a new reader learns the ending once and then just swaps the beginning — a huge confidence boost. Only real, kind, decodable words are offered for each family, so everything your child builds is a true word worth reading.
Good for
Kindergarten and first grade, once a child knows their letter sounds and is ready to blend short words — a natural next step after sounding out with the Blending & Segmenting tool.
