Privacy Policy
Your family’s data is yours.
Effective October 1, 2026 · Applies to homeschoolofthefuture.com and the Homeschool of the Future mobile app.
Homeschool of the Future (“we”, “us”) is a homeschool operating system built for parents. Our promise is short: no ads, no selling or sharing of family data, no third-party trackers on child screens — the subscription is the entire business. This page explains exactly what we collect, why, and the controls you have.
The short version
- Accounts belong to parents. Children never have accounts, and we never collect contact information from children.
- We collect only what the product needs: your email to sign you in, and the learning records your family creates.
- We show no ads, run no advertising trackers, and never sell or share personal data for advertising. On our public pages we keep an anonymous count of visits — no cookies, nothing that identifies you.
- You can export everything as plain JSON anytime, and you can permanently delete your account and all of its data yourself — on the website or inside the app.
What we collect
Things you give us
- Account: your email address, an optional display name, and (if you set one) a password stored only as a secure hash.
- Family setup: a family name, each learner’s first name, grade level, schedule, and theme preference. A first name and grade is all we ever ask about a child.
- Learning records: the activities, lessons, and games your family completes — titles, subjects, minutes, and scores — which become your attendance, hours, and skill records.
- Bug reports & messages you send: if you use the “report a bug” button, we receive your description, the page you were on, recent technical error messages from that page, basic device info, and — only if you leave it included — a screenshot of the page and an optional contact email.
Things collected automatically
- Session cookies that keep you signed in, and a cookie that keeps an anonymous “demo” family together before you create an account (so nothing is lost when you do).
- On-device preferences (theme, sound on/off, tour progress, trail game progress) stored in your browser or device — most of this never leaves your device.
- Standard server logs (IP address, request time) kept briefly by our hosting provider for security and reliability.
- Anonymous visit counts on our public pages: the homepage, the free visual lessons, the sign-in pages, our California filing guide, and our privacy and terms pages. Our host, Vercel, counts them for us (Vercel Web Analytics), recording which page was viewed (plus any campaign tag on the link), the site that linked you there, your approximate location (country, region, and city), and your browser, operating system, and device type. It uses no cookies. Visits are told apart only by a temporary code that’s thrown away after 24 hours, so it can’t recognize you on a later day or follow you to other sites. It doesn’t run inside the signed-in app, the trail games, or the mobile app.
That’s the whole list. No contact scraping, no precise location, no advertising identifiers.
Children’s privacy
Homeschool of the Future is a tool for parents and guardians (18+). Children use it under their parent’s account and supervision. We designed for this from day one:
- Children cannot create accounts, and we collect no email, phone, or contact information from children.
- The only child information in the system is what a parent chooses to enter (a first name and grade) and the learning activity recorded to the parent’s family account. The parent controls, exports, and can delete all of it.
- No ads and no third-party trackers appear on any screen a child uses.
- The free visual lessons are public pages, so they’re included in the anonymous visit count above. It records that a lesson page was viewed, never who viewed it.
- The free trail games store progress on the device itself, not on our servers.
How we use information
- To run the product: sign you in, plan each day, keep your records, and generate the reports your state requires.
- To email you sign-in links and essential account messages (we don’t send marketing email without your consent).
- To fix problems: bug reports and error logs are used to find and repair defects, nothing else.
- To see which public pages and shared links bring families to us, using only the anonymous visit counts.
What we never do
- No selling or renting personal data. No sharing it for advertising. No ad networks anywhere.
- No advertising trackers or tracking pixels, and no analytics that identify you or follow you across sites.
- No engagement-bait notifications, and no dark patterns around your data.
Who processes data for us
Like nearly every online service, we rely on a few infrastructure providers who process data on our behalf, under their own security and confidentiality obligations. They are not permitted to use your data for their own purposes:
- Vercel — web hosting and delivery, and the anonymous visit counts on our public pages (Vercel Web Analytics).
- Amazon Web Services — our database (Amazon RDS) and sign-in email delivery (Amazon SES), in the United States.
- Expo — mobile app build and update delivery (the app checks Expo’s servers for app updates).
We disclose information beyond this only if the law genuinely requires it, and we’ll tell you unless we’re legally barred from doing so.
Export, correction, and deletion
- Export: your account page has a one-click “Export everything (JSON)” button. Records must outlive any company, including ours.
- Correction: you can edit family and learner details directly in the product.
- Deletion: you can permanently delete your account — including your family, every learner, and every record — yourself, anytime: on the web at Account → Leaving the forest, or in the mobile app under Account → Delete your account. Deletion is immediate. Bug reports are kept for product quality but are stripped of your identity when your account is deleted.
We keep your data only while your account exists (plus short-lived backups that expire on a rolling basis).
Security
Data travels over HTTPS and lives in an access-controlled database. Passwords are stored only as bcrypt hashes. Sign-in links expire in 15 minutes. No system is perfect — if we ever learn of a breach affecting your data, we will tell you promptly.
Your rights
Depending on where you live (including under the California Consumer Privacy Act and Europe’s GDPR), you may have rights to access, correct, delete, or port your personal data, and to complain to a regulator. The export and deletion tools above honor these rights directly, and you can always reach us for anything else. We do not “sell” or “share” personal information as those terms are defined in the CCPA, so there is nothing to opt out of.
Changes
If we change this policy, we’ll update the date at the top and, for meaningful changes, tell you in the product or by email before they take effect.
