Pick a vowel team

What are vowel teams?

A vowel team is two vowels working together to make one sound — like ai in rain, ee in tree, or oa in boat. In many teams the first vowel says its own name (its “long” sound) while the second stays quiet, which is where the old rhyme “when two vowels go walking, they do the talking” comes from. A few teams — like oo in moon and oi in coin — make their own special sound instead.

How to use this tool

  • Pick a vowel team — choose from ai, ay, ea, ee, oa, oo, ow, and oi.
  • Tap the big team — hear the sound those two letters make together.
  • Tap a word — hear it read aloud. The team letters are highlighted so your reader can spot the pattern.
  • Next / Shuffle — move through the example words one at a time or in a new order.

Why it helps

Once children can blend single sounds, vowel teams are the next big step in decoding. Seeing the team highlighted inside real words — rain, leaf, snow — trains the eye to treat those two letters as one sound instead of sounding them out separately. Hearing the word right after builds the link between the letters and the sound.

Good for

First through third grade — readers who know their letter sounds and are ready for long-vowel and vowel-team patterns.
