Theme & Symbol

Look past what happens to what it means — the lesson a story teaches, and the ideas that everyday objects stand for.

Fable🐢 The Tortoise and the Hare

Which one is the theme?

Two of these are just plot — what happened. One is the theme — the lesson the story teaches. Tap the theme.

📖 Plot is what happens — the events of the story, in order. 💡 Theme is the deeper message or lesson those events teach. Ask yourself: “What does this story want me to learn?”

Theme vs. plot

The plot is what happens in a story — the events, in order. The theme is the deeper message or lesson those events add up to: what the story is really about. Younger readers can retell the plot; stronger readers step back and name the theme.

What is a symbol?

A symbol is an object that stands for a bigger idea — a dove for peace, a heart for love, a sunrise for hope. Authors lean on symbols to carry meaning quietly, without stating it outright.

How to use it

  • In Plot vs Theme, read a short fable (tap it, or the speaker, to hear it), then tap the statement that gives the theme — the lesson — instead of one that just retells the plot.
  • In Symbols, look at a symbol and tap what it most often stands for, or flip the card to explore the meaning on your own.
  • A correct answer turns green; a miss gives a gentle nudge to look again, then reveals why.
  • Use Next or Shuffle for a new fable or symbol.

Why it helps

Naming a theme means summing up a whole story in a single idea — a skill that shows up on every reading test and in every book discussion. Practicing with familiar fables, where the lesson is clear, builds the habit of asking “what is this really about?” before tackling longer, subtler literature. Symbolism works the same way: once a reader sees that objects can stand for ideas, poems and novels open up.

Good for

Best for grades 6–12 readers moving from retelling stories to analyzing them, and a friendly refresher for anyone learning to spot theme and symbolism.
