Synonyms & Antonyms
Slide from cold to hot to see shades of meaning, then tell synonyms (same) from antonyms (opposite).
Temperature
Tap a word to hear it and see where it sits — from one extreme to the other.
Tap a word on the scale above.
Synonyms — words with nearly the same meaning (big / large).
Antonyms — words with opposite meanings (hot / cold).
Shades of meaning — small steps between two extremes (cool → warm → hot).
What are synonyms and antonyms?
Synonyms are words that mean nearly the same thing — like big and large. Antonyms are opposites — like hot and cold. Knowing both gives young writers more ways to say exactly what they mean.
What are “shades of meaning”?
Words come in shades, like colors. Freezing, cold, cool, warm, and hot all describe temperature, but each one is a little stronger than the last. Seeing the words line up on a scale makes it clear why thrilled is more than glad, or why huge is more than big.
How to use this tool
- Shades of meaning: tap a word on the scale — it says itself and a marker slides to its spot between the two extremes.
- Same or opposite?: read the word pair, then tap Synonyms or Antonyms. Correct turns green; a miss gives a kind “try again.”
- Use Next or Shuffle for a new scale or pair, and the speaker button to hear the words.
Why it helps
Sorting real words by meaning beats memorizing lists. Placing a word on a scale, or judging same-versus-opposite, builds the vocabulary and precision that make reading richer and writing sharper. It works fully with the sound off, so it fits any setting.
Good for
Second and third graders meeting synonyms and antonyms, through middle-school students fine-tuning word choice (grades 2–8).
