What are sight words?
Sight words are the most common words in English — words like the, said, you, and because. They appear on nearly every page, and many can’t be fully sounded out, so children learn to recognize them instantly. Teachers often call them “heart words” because you come to know them by heart.
How to use this tool
- Pick a level — Pre-K, Kindergarten, First, or Second.
- Read the big word out loud, then tap the card (or the speaker) to hear it and check.
- Tap Next word to move on, or Shuffle to mix up the order.
- When a word has a sample sentence, tap it to hear the word used in a kind, everyday example.
The little counter (like “3 / 20”) shows where you are in the list. The word is always shown big, so the cards work even with the sound turned off.
Why practicing sight words helps
When common words become automatic, young readers stop having to stop. Their eyes and attention are freed to sound out the trickier words and to think about what a sentence actually means — which makes reading faster, smoother, and a lot more enjoyable.
Good for
Emerging and early readers in Pre-K through 2nd grade, plus gentle fluency review for any child building confidence. The word lists follow the familiar Dolch and Fry high-frequency sequences used in most reading programs.
