Punctuation Power

The same words can tell, ask, or shout — the end mark changes the meaning and how you say it.

The idea: you are going home. Pick an end mark — see and hear how it changes.

A period ends a telling sentence. Say it in a calm, steady voice.

.
Telling sentence
Tells something. Calm voice.
?
Asking sentence
Asks something. Voice goes up.
!
Excited sentence
Big feeling. Excited voice!

Your turn

Which end mark finishes this sentence?

The sky is blue __

Tap a period, a question mark, or an exclamation point.

The words can stay almost the same — the end mark tells your voice whether to tell, ask, or shout.

What are end marks?

Every sentence ends with a punctuation mark, and that little mark does a big job. It tells the reader what kind of sentence it is — and it tells your voice how to say it out loud.

The three end marks

  • Period (.) — ends a telling sentence, called a statement. Read it in a calm, steady voice.
  • Question mark (?) — ends a sentence that asks. Your voice lifts up at the end.
  • Exclamation point (!) — shows a strong feeling like surprise or excitement. Say it with energy!

How to use this tool

  • Pick an end mark and watch the sentence change — sometimes the words even swap order to become a question.
  • Tap the sentence, or the speaker button, to hear how each mark changes the way it sounds.
  • Press Next sentence to try a new idea.
  • In Your turn, read the sentence and tap the end mark that fits — you will get a cheer when it is right.

Why it helps

Hearing the very same words as a statement, a question, and an exclamation makes the job of each mark click. Kids stop guessing end marks and start choosing them on purpose — a habit that carries straight into their own writing.

Good for

Grades 1–6: from first sentences and reading with expression up to confident editing.
