What is the main idea?
📌 Main idea — what the whole passage is mostly about. It is the tabletop.
🦵 Supporting details — smaller facts that back it up. They are the legs that hold it up.
What is the main idea?
The main idea is what a passage is mostly about — the one big point the writer wants you to remember. The details are the smaller facts and examples that back it up. Picture a table: the main idea is the flat tabletop on top, and each supporting detail is a leg holding it up. Take away the legs and the whole idea falls over.
How to use this tool
- Read the short passage at the top (tap it to hear it read aloud).
- Choose the best main idea from the three cards. One is just a single detail, one is too broad, and one is exactly right.
- When you pick the right one, it sits on the tabletop. Then sort the four sentences into supporting details and not about this.
- Correct choices lock in; a wrong pick bounces back with a gentle hint so you can try again.
Why it helps
Strong readers do this every time they read: they hold the big idea in mind and check whether each sentence supports it. Some sentences are true but off-topic — learning to set those aside is a key part of finding the real main idea and, later, writing a clear summary.
Good for
Grades 2–6 reading comprehension: identifying the central idea, telling main ideas from supporting details, and getting ready to summarize a paragraph in your own words.
