Division

Deal a pile of counters out fairly and watch the equal groups — and the remainder — appear, with every step read aloud.

What is division?

Division splits a total into equal parts. There are two ways to think about it, and this tool shows both: you can share a total into a set number of groups and ask “how many in each?”, or you can make groups of a fixed size and ask “how many groups?”. Both answer the same number sentence, total ÷ n = quotient.

How to use this tool

  • Share into N groups — fix the number of groups, then press play to deal counters round-robin (“one for you, one for you…”). Each group fills up to the quotient.
  • Make groups of N — fix the group size and fill one group at a time; the number of complete groups is the quotient.
  • Remainders — when the total won’t split evenly, the leftover counters drop into the remainder tray so “r” is something you can actually see.
  • Use Play, Step, and Replay to control the pace, adjust the Total and divisor, and turn the voice on to count each counter and hear the finished fact.

Why it helps

Seeing division as dealing out a real pile connects the symbol “÷” to something concrete. Watching the same total split two different ways builds the flexible number sense behind long division, factors, and fractions — and remainders stop being mysterious once you can count the leftovers.

Good for

Best for grades 3–5, as students move from equal groups and arrays into division facts, remainders, and the start of long division.
