What is a ten-frame?
A ten-frame is a simple grid of ten boxes — two rows of five — that you fill with counters one at a time. Because our whole number system is built on tens, seeing a group of ten (and how far a number is from ten) helps young children picture quantities instead of only reciting number words.
How to use this tool
- Pick a range — 1–10, 1–20, or all the way to 100.
- Choose to count by 1s, 2s, 5s, or 10s.
- Set the number you want to reach, then press Play to watch each counter appear as its number is spoken.
- Press Step to count one group at a time, or tap a box or block yourself to count it.
Ten-frames and base-ten blocks
For small counts the tool uses ten-frames. For bigger numbers it switches to base-ten blocks — loose ones, tens rods, and a hundreds flat — so children see how ten ones make a ten and ten tens make one hundred. That bridge from counting to place value is the foundation for adding, subtracting, and regrouping later on.
Why it builds number sense
Filling a ten-frame teaches subitizing (recognizing small amounts at a glance), the friendly anchors of five and ten, and early facts like “8 is 2 away from 10.” Skip-counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s builds fluency and quietly lays the groundwork for multiplication.
Good for
Preschool, kindergarten, first, and second grade — from a child’s very first counts through confident skip-counting within 100.
