Context Clues
Meet a hard word, read the clues around it, and figure out what it means — no dictionary needed.
The elephant was so enormous it could barely fit through the gate.
Tap the amber word to hear it. The green words are your clues.
What does “gigantic” mean?
Read the clue words, then tap what “gigantic” means.
Context clues are the words around a hard word that hint at its meaning. When you meet a word you don’t know, don’t stop — read the whole sentence and ask, “What do the other words tell me?” The nearby clues almost always point the way.
What are context clues?
Context clues are the words and ideas around an unfamiliar word that hint at what it means. Strong readers don’t freeze when they hit a hard word — they read the rest of the sentence and let the nearby words fill in the gap. This tool makes that skill visible: the tricky word is highlighted in amber, and the helpful clue words are highlighted in green.
How to use it
- Read the sentence out loud (tap the amber word to hear it, or the speaker to hear the whole sentence).
- Look at the green clue words — ask, “What do these tell me about the tricky word?”
- Tap the meaning you think fits. A correct answer turns green and explains how the clues point to it; a miss gives a kind nudge to look again.
- Use Next or Shuffle for a new sentence.
Why it helps
Guessing meaning from context is one of the most powerful vocabulary skills there is — it lets readers keep going through harder books and quietly grow their word bank. Seeing the clue words highlighted trains the eye to hunt for them without any help at all.
Good for
Best for grades 3–8, and a helpful warm-up for any older reader who wants a clear, low-pressure way to practice reading comprehension and vocabulary.
