Addition
See two groups come together and count the total — with counters or a number line, and every step read aloud.
3 + 2 = 5
What is addition?
Addition is putting groups together to find how many there are altogether. This tool shows that idea two ways: two colored groups of counters that slide into one and get counted, or a hop forward along a number line. Seeing the same fact both ways helps the meaning stick.
How to use this tool
- Pick two numbers with the steppers — the first group and the second group.
- Counters — press play to watch the groups combine, then count the total up one by one.
- Number line — start on the first number and hop forward by the second to land on the sum.
- Play, Step, or Replay at your own pace, choose a range (to 10, 20, or 100), set the speed, and mute the voice any time.
Why it helps
Watching counters merge builds the part-part-whole idea behind every addition fact, while the number line shows adding as moving forward. Together they grow the number sense children lean on later for mental math and bigger sums. Turn the voice on and let your child predict the total before it counts.
Good for
Kindergarten through 3rd grade (K–3): joining groups and sums within 10, building fluency to 20, and stretching to 100.
