First little add: 2 and 1 more

Introduce simple addition as combining a small group with 1 more object and counting the new total.

Adding means putting groups together and counting them all as one big group.

If you have 2 crackers and get 1 more, you can count them all together to find out how many that is now.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Use real objects every time - "adding 1 more" should be something your child can see and touch, not an abstract idea yet.
  • After adding, always recount the whole group together from one, rather than just adding on in their head.
  • Keep both starting numbers small (1 to 4) so the total never goes past 5 this week.
  • Say "and one more" often - that phrase is the heart of this week idea.
Talk about it:
  • If you have 2 toys and get 1 more, how many do you have?
  • How did counting help you find the new total?
  • Can you show me 3 and 1 more with your fingers?

Mastery looks like: Child combines a small group with 1 more object and correctly counts the new total by recounting the whole group.

Common stumbles: Child forgets to include the original group and only counts the new object, or forgets to recount from the start.
