Count to 7 with hops and claps

Extend counting to 7 using movement, such as hops and claps, one action per number.

You have counted to 5. Now you will stretch your counting all the way to 7.

Moving your body while you count - hopping or clapping - helps the new numbers stick.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • New numbers past 5 (six, seven) can be wobbly - expect to repeat this several times before it feels solid.
  • Alternate between movement (hops, claps) and objects (crackers, blocks) so counting to 7 is not tied to just one activity.
  • If your child loses the count, that is normal - just restart from one together, calmly.
  • Keep sessions short and physical - preschoolers count better when their whole body is part of it.
Talk about it:
  • Can you clap 7 times with me?
  • What number comes after six?
  • Was counting to 7 harder than counting to 5? What was different?

Mastery looks like: Child counts to 7 with one action (clap, hop, or touch) per number, landing correctly on seven.

Common stumbles: Child rushes through six and seven, the newest numbers, and either skips one or repeats one.
