Count on from any number

Count forward to 20 starting from any given number, not just from 1.

You do not always have to start counting at 1. If someone says start at 7, you just keep going: 7, 8, 9, 10, and on up to 20.

This is called counting on. It is a big kid skill because it means you know the number order by heart, not just from the very beginning.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Pick a random number and say start counting there. Make it a fun surprise game.
  • If your child restarts at 1 every time, gently remind them to start where you said.
  • Use a number line or a hundred chart so they can point and check.
  • Practice starting from teen numbers (11-19) since those are the newest and trickiest.
Talk about it:
  • Is it harder to count on from a big number or a small number?
  • Why do you not need to start at 1 every time?
  • What is one number you can count on from easily?

Mastery looks like: They count forward to 20 starting from any number without going back to 1 first.

Common stumbles: Restarting at 1 out of habit; hesitating or losing the sequence right after a teen number.
