Adding within 10 using pictures

Solve addition problems within 10 by drawing or using pictures of objects to join and count groups.

You know your teens and your make-ten pairs now. It is time to add bigger numbers, all the way up to 10. Drawing a quick picture helps you see the two groups before you join them.

Draw simple shapes like circles or dots. You do not need real objects for every problem. A picture works just as well.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Keep the drawings simple. Dots or small circles are faster than detailed pictures.
  • Have your child count all the pictures from 1 to find the total, touching each one.
  • Encourage checking a make-ten pair first if it applies, such as with 6 + 4.
  • Move from real objects to pictures as a natural next step, not a replacement forever.
Talk about it:
  • How does drawing dots help you add?
  • What is a fast way to draw a group of 6?
  • Can you solve 5 + 5 with a picture?

Mastery looks like: They solve addition problems within 10 by drawing simple pictures and counting the combined total accurately.

Common stumbles: Drawing overly detailed pictures that slow down counting; losing count of the combined group past 10.
