Checkpoint: fast facts within 5

Demonstrate addition and subtraction fluency within 5 without counting all from one, and solve simple story problems.

Another checkpoint. This week shows off how far you have come with numbers up to 5. You have practiced adding, subtracting, number bonds, and stories.

Try to answer without counting from 1 every time. If you get stuck, checking with fingers is always allowed.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Keep this warm and celebratory. It is a chance to notice real growth since the fall.
  • Mix addition, subtraction, and one quick story problem so all the skills show up.
  • If a fact is still slow, that is useful information, not a problem to fix today.
  • Compare today to when they only had objects to count with. Progress is real.
Talk about it:
  • Which facts felt fast and easy today?
  • Which ones still need your fingers?
  • How do you feel about numbers up to 5 now?

Mastery looks like: They solve addition and subtraction facts within 5 with growing speed and solve a simple story problem correctly.

Common stumbles: Reverting to counting from 1 for very familiar facts; hesitating on the story problem instead of trusting the clue words.
