Adding within 5, getting fast

Add within 5 with increasing speed and confidence, moving from counting all toward recognizing some facts instantly.

You have added with objects for weeks. Now let us get fast. For small facts like 1 + 1 or 2 + 1, try to just know the answer without counting from 1.

If a fact feels hard, that is okay. Count on your fingers. But keep trying the fact again later. One day it will just pop into your head.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Ask the fact first, and give a few quiet seconds before offering fingers as a backup.
  • Celebrate speed and correct fingers-counting equally. Both are wins right now.
  • Repeat the same small set of facts (within 5) often, in short, playful bursts.
  • Never rush or shame a slow answer. Fast recall comes after lots of gentle practice.
Talk about it:
  • Which facts within 5 do you already just know?
  • Which ones still need your fingers?
  • Can you beat your own speed from yesterday?

Mastery looks like: They answer most addition facts within 5 quickly, using fingers only when truly needed.

Common stumbles: Recounting from 1 every single time, even for very familiar facts; rushing and guessing instead of checking.
