Addition stories with objects

Model simple addition stories, such as 2+1 and 3+1, with real objects, and find the total by joining groups and counting.

Addition means putting groups together to find the total. If you have 2 apples and get 1 more, you can count them all: 1, 2, 3. Now you have 3 apples.

We write this as 2 + 1 = 3. The plus sign means put together. The equal sign means is the same as.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Always use real objects first: toys, snacks, coins. Let your child physically push groups together.
  • Have them count all the objects from 1 after joining, every time, for now.
  • Say the story out loud: 2 cars, and 1 more car, makes how many cars?
  • Keep the numbers tiny (adding 1) this week. Bigger jumps come soon.
Talk about it:
  • What does it mean to add two groups together?
  • How do you find the total after joining groups?
  • Can you make up your own addition story with toys?

Mastery looks like: They act out simple addition stories with objects, join the groups, and count the total correctly.

Common stumbles: Counting only the new group instead of counting everyone; losing track while counting the combined pile.
