Second Grade · Writing · week 7

Edit: Capitals, End Marks, Commas

Edit a full paragraph by checking three things in order: capital letters, end marks, and commas in lists.

Editing means checking your own writing for mistakes before it is finished. This week you check a whole paragraph for three things, one at a time: capitals, end marks, and commas in lists.

Good editors check one thing at a time instead of trying to catch everything at once. First read for capitals only. Then read again for end marks. Then read once more for commas.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Do the three checks as three separate passes, even if it feels slow -- that habit catches far more mistakes than one quick read.
  • Use a different colored pencil for each of the three checks so your child can see their own progress.
  • Read the paragraph aloud after each check to hear whether it now sounds complete.
  • Praise careful, slow checking over fast guessing -- editing rewards patience.
Talk about it:
  • What are the three things you checked in this paragraph?
  • Which check did you do first, and why start there?
  • Did reading the paragraph aloud help you catch anything?

Mastery looks like: They independently edit a paragraph for capitals, end marks, and commas in lists, checking one at a time.

Common stumbles: Trying to catch all three kinds of errors in a single fast read instead of doing three separate checks.
