Edit with the Checklist

Edit the animal report using a checklist: capitals, end marks, commas in lists, and the spelling of key words.

Before publishing, every report gets one more careful pass: the editing checklist. This week you check four things in order: capitals, end marks, commas in any lists, and the spelling of your animal's name and key words.

Read slowly, one check at a time. Editing is not about writing more -- it is about making what you already wrote as correct as it can be.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Do the four checks as four separate passes rather than one fast read -- slow and thorough beats quick and sloppy.
  • Have your child circle their animal's name every time it appears, to make sure the spelling matches throughout.
  • Read the report aloud one more time after all four checks, listening for anything that still sounds off.
  • Praise catching even one small error -- editing is a skill built by noticing, not by getting everything perfect the first time.
Talk about it:
  • Which of the four checks caught the most mistakes in your report?
  • Was your animal's name spelled the same way every time before you checked?
  • What is one error you are glad you caught before publishing?

Mastery looks like: They edit their own report for capitals, end marks, commas in lists, and consistent spelling of key words.

Common stumbles: Checking spelling only the first time a word appears and missing an inconsistent spelling later in the same report.
