Publishing: Your Neatest, Best Copy

Edit and copy an opinion piece into a clean, final "published" version, checking capitals, end marks, and spacing.

Publishing means making a clean, final copy of your writing to share. Before you copy it over, you EDIT it -- checking capital letters, end marks, and spacing between words.

Pick your best opinion piece from this unit. This week, you will edit it carefully and then write (or type) your very best, neatest final copy.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Treat this like a real occasion -- a special pen, a clean sheet of paper, or a printed copy -- publishing should feel a little special.
  • Read the edited draft aloud one more time before copying it over, to catch anything missed.
  • Let your child do the copying themselves, even slowly -- the physical act of writing it again reinforces every rule practiced this unit.
  • Keep the published copy somewhere it can be seen or shared, since next week's celebration builds on it.
Talk about it:
  • What does "editing" mean, and how is it different from "publishing"?
  • What three things did you check while editing your piece?
  • How do you feel about your finished, published piece?

Mastery looks like: They edit their own opinion piece for capitals, end marks, and spacing, then produce a neat, correct final copy.

Common stumbles: Copying over the same errors from the draft without actually checking each one during editing.
