Within-10 review with number bonds

Review number bonds within 10 and write the matching addition and subtraction facts.

A number bond shows a whole broken into two parts. If the whole is 7, the two parts could be 5 and 2, or 3 and 4, or 6 and 1. Many different pairs of parts can make the same whole.

Number bonds show that addition and subtraction are one family. If 5 and 2 make 7, then 7 take away 2 leaves 5, and 7 take away 5 leaves 2.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Use ten small objects (beans, blocks, buttons) so your child can physically split the whole into two piles.
  • Draw a simple bond: a circle for the whole on top, two circles below it for the parts, connected by lines.
  • Say the fact family out loud every time: "5 and 2 make 7, so 7 take away 2 is 5."
  • Keep every number at or below 10 this week -- this is review, not new ground.
Talk about it:
  • If 4 and 3 are the parts, what is the whole?
  • Can you find a different pair of parts for the same whole?
  • How does knowing 6 + 4 = 10 help you with 10 - 4?

Mastery looks like: They split a number up to 10 into two parts and write the matching addition and subtraction facts.

Common stumbles: Mixing up which number is the whole and which are the parts; forgetting that a whole can be split more than one way.
