More or fewer? Compare little piles

Compare two small piles of up to about 5 objects by counting, and identify which pile has more and which has fewer.

When you have two piles, one pile can have more, and the other has fewer.

You can count each pile, then compare the numbers to see which is more.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Always count each pile out loud before comparing - counting first makes the comparison easy and accurate.
  • Use the words "more" and "fewer" often; "same" is a great third answer to notice too.
  • Line the piles up side by side so your child can also SEE the difference, not just hear the numbers.
  • Keep the piles small (1 to 5) so counting stays easy while comparing is the new skill.
Talk about it:
  • Which pile has more, this one or that one?
  • How did counting help you know which pile has more?
  • Can you make a pile with fewer than mine?

Mastery looks like: Child counts two small piles and correctly says which has more, which has fewer, or if they are the same.

Common stumbles: Child judges by how spread out a pile looks instead of by the counted number, so a spread-out smaller pile seems like "more."
