Count 5 snacks, 5 steps, 5 stars

Count to 5 across different contexts: real objects, physical actions, and drawings.

You can count all sorts of things, not just objects on a table.

You can count snacks you eat, steps you take, or stars you draw - counting to 5 works everywhere.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Mix up what you count - snacks, steps, claps, stars - so your child learns the number 5 is not tied to one kind of thing.
  • Count actions (steps, claps, hops) as well as objects; moving the body while counting builds the skill differently than sitting still.
  • If drawing stars is tricky, simple blobs or dots work fine - the counting is the point, not the art.
  • Keep celebrating landing exactly on five.
Talk about it:
  • What are three different things we counted to 5 today?
  • Can you count 5 hops for me?
  • Does counting to 5 feel different when you count steps instead of crackers?

Mastery looks like: Child reliably counts to 5 across different contexts - objects, actions, and drawings - without needing to restart.

Common stumbles: Child counts objects fine but loses track when counting actions like steps or claps, since there is nothing to touch.
