ABC patterns: clap, stomp, jump

Recognize and extend a three-part repeating pattern (an ABC pattern).

You know patterns with 2 parts. Now try a pattern with 3 parts: clap, stomp, jump, clap, stomp, jump.

An ABC pattern has three different things that repeat in the same order, over and over.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Move from 2-part to 3-part patterns only after AB patterns feel solid - this is a real jump in difficulty.
  • Full-body movement patterns (clap, stomp, jump) are a fun, memorable way to introduce the third part.
  • Slow the pattern down and repeat it several times before asking what comes next.
  • If three parts is too much right now, that is fine - back up to AB patterns and revisit ABC again in a week or two.
Talk about it:
  • What are the three moves in our pattern?
  • What comes right after jump in our pattern?
  • Can you make up your own three-part pattern?

Mastery looks like: Child recognizes the three-part repeating unit in an ABC pattern and correctly predicts what comes next.

Common stumbles: Child treats it like an AB pattern and only tracks two of the three parts, mispredicting the third.
