Count to 20 with the counting song

Extend rote counting to 20 using a counting song for rhythm and memory support.

Songs make big numbers easier to remember. Today you will sing your way all the way to 20.

The rhythm of a song helps the number words come out in the right order.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Pick one simple counting song and repeat it daily - repetition of the SAME song builds the strongest memory.
  • Clapping, marching, or tapping the beat helps numbers come out in the right rhythm and order.
  • It is fine if singing to 20 is smoother than counting to 20 without the tune at first - the song is a scaffold, not cheating.
  • Gradually try counting without singing to check the numbers are sticking on their own too.
Talk about it:
  • Can you sing our counting song all the way to 20?
  • What comes right after nineteen?
  • Is it easier to count to 20 with the song or without it? Why?

Mastery looks like: Child recites numbers 1 to 20 in order, with or without the song, without skipping a number.

Common stumbles: Child leans on the tune so heavily that counting without singing causes them to lose their place.
