Count anything: cars, birds, buttons

Apply counting skills to spontaneous, real-world objects without a set-up scenario.

You do not need a special lesson to count - you can count anything, anytime, anywhere.

Cars going by, birds on a wire, buttons in a jar - if you can see it, you can count it.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • This week has no fixed numbers - the point is applying counting to whatever your child notices in real life.
  • Follow what your child is interested in today: if it is bugs, count bugs; if it is cars, count cars.
  • Moving objects (cars, birds) are harder to count than still ones - it is fine if the count is approximate for fast-moving things.
  • Ask "how did you count that?" to hear the strategy, not just the final number.
Talk about it:
  • What is something fun you counted today?
  • Was it harder to count things that move, like cars, than things that sit still?
  • What is your favorite thing to count?

Mastery looks like: Child spontaneously and accurately applies counting to novel, real objects without needing a scripted setup.

Common stumbles: Child undercounts or loses track when the objects are moving or otherwise hard to point at one at a time.
