Count out exactly 8 objects on request

Count out a group of exactly 8 objects from a larger pile, on request.

Counting out a group means stopping at exactly the right number, not one more or one less.

If someone asks for 8 crackers, you count until you say "eight," then you stop.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • This is harder than counting a pile that is already there - your child must control WHEN to stop.
  • Have your child move each object into the new pile one at a time while counting, rather than just pointing.
  • Always recount the finished pile together as a check - this builds a self-checking habit.
  • If they overshoot past 8, that is common - calmly remove the extra ones together while recounting.
Talk about it:
  • How do you know when to stop counting?
  • Can you count out exactly 8 blocks for me?
  • How can you check that you counted out the right number?

Mastery looks like: Child reliably counts out an exact requested amount (up to 8) from a larger pile, stopping at the correct number.

Common stumbles: Child keeps moving objects past the target number out of counting momentum, without stopping to check.
