Count 1 to 3 with fingers and objects

Count a small group of 1 to 3 objects aloud, touching each object exactly once.

Numbers are for counting things you can touch. Today you will count 1, 2, 3.

When you count, touch one thing for every number word. One touch, one word. That is the big rule.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Sit close together so your child can see and touch every object.
  • Say the counting words slowly and clearly, one word for each touch.
  • If your child rushes and says numbers without touching, slow down and touch it together, hand over hand.
  • Celebrate every try, even a wobbly one - counting to 3 is brand new work for a 4-year-old.
Talk about it:
  • Can you count these blocks with me?
  • How many crackers do you have on your plate?
  • Can you show me 1 finger? 2 fingers?

Mastery looks like: Child counts a group of 1 to 3 objects aloud, touching each object exactly once, without skipping or double-counting.

Common stumbles: Child says number words faster than they touch objects, so the touches and words do not match up.
