Checkpoint: one correct sentence unaided

Independently write one complete, correct sentence with no help: capital, spacing, spelling attempt, and ending mark.

This is a big checkpoint. Can you write one whole sentence, completely on your own, with everything correct?

Think of an idea, say it out loud once, then write it with no help. Use everything you have learned this year.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Step back completely this week. The point is to see what your child can do with zero help.
  • Resist correcting while they write. Save any feedback for after, using the self-check questions.
  • Walk through the four-point self-check together once the sentence is finished: capital, spacing, spelling attempt, ending mark.
  • Celebrate this moment. A single independent, correct sentence is a real kindergarten milestone.
Talk about it:
  • What did you choose to write about?
  • Which of the four checks (capital, spacing, spelling, ending mark) did you get right away?
  • How did it feel to write a whole sentence with no help?

Mastery looks like: They independently write one complete sentence with a capital at the start, clear spacing, a reasonable spelling attempt, and a correct ending mark.

Common stumbles: Needing a prompt or reminder for one of the four checks; losing an idea partway through and writing an incomplete sentence.
