Write about your drawing

Draw a picture, then write one sentence that tells about the picture.

You have labeled drawings with one word, and even two words. Now you will write a whole sentence about your drawing.

Draw first. Then look at your picture and think: what is happening here? Say it out loud as a full sentence, then write it.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Let the drawing come first every time. A detailed drawing gives your child something real to write about.
  • Always have your child say the sentence out loud, word by word, before picking up the pencil.
  • Help with spelling only when asked; encourage sounding out heart words and stretching regular words.
  • Read the finished sentence back together, pointing to each word.
Talk about it:
  • What did you draw, and what sentence did you write about it?
  • Did your sentence match your picture?
  • What is one thing you could add to your drawing or sentence next time?

Mastery looks like: They draw a picture and write one complete sentence that accurately describes it, said aloud first and then written.

Common stumbles: Writing a sentence that does not match the picture; forgetting to say the sentence out loud first; leaving out a word from the spoken sentence when writing it.
