Copy a short sentence beautifully

Copy a short written sentence with careful, neat letter formation and correct spacing.

This week is not about making up your own words. It is about copying a sentence as neatly and carefully as you can.

Look at the whole word before you copy it, not just one letter at a time. Match the shape, the spacing, and the ending mark.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Write a short sentence on a card or sticky note for your child to copy onto their own paper.
  • Encourage looking up at the model sentence, then writing several letters from memory, rather than checking after every single letter.
  • Praise neatness specifically this week: even spacing, letters sitting on the line, a clear ending mark.
  • Keep the sentence itself simple. The skill this week is careful copying, not new sentence ideas.
Talk about it:
  • What sentence did you copy today?
  • What made your copy neat: the spacing, the letters, or the ending mark?
  • Was it easier to copy a whole word at once, or one letter at a time?

Mastery looks like: They copy a short sentence with even spacing, recognizable letters sitting on the line, and the correct ending mark.

Common stumbles: Copying one letter at a time and losing the word shape; crowding words together; leaving off the period at the end.
