Heart words from memory

Write a small set of heart words (common words with a tricky part) correctly from memory.

Some words do not sound the way you would expect when you stretch them. We call these heart words because you learn them by heart.

The word "the" has a tricky part. You cannot just sound it out the regular way. You have to remember it, like a word you know well.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Pick two or three heart words at a time: the, a, I, and to are good starting words.
  • Use the routine look, say, cover, write, check every time. The repetition of the routine matters more than any one word.
  • Point out exactly which part of the word is tricky, and which part is normal, so the memorizing job feels smaller.
  • Review heart words from past weeks often. They fade quickly without repeated practice.
Talk about it:
  • Which heart word did you practice today?
  • What part of that word is tricky to sound out?
  • Can you use that heart word in a sentence out loud?

Mastery looks like: They write a small set of heart words correctly from memory, without sounding them out letter by letter.

Common stumbles: Trying to sound out the tricky part instead of remembering it; forgetting a heart word learned in an earlier week without review.
