The Last Eight Sounds: K J U V Y Z Q X

Say the sound for the letters k, j, u, v, y, z, q, and x, completing all 26 letter sounds.

This week finishes the whole alphabet. Eight letters today: k, j, u, v, y, z, q, and x. After this, you will know a sound for every single letter.

Two of these behave a little differently. Q almost always stands next to u, and together they say "kw," like in queen. X usually sits at the end of a word and says "ks," like in fox.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Save q and x for last, since both behave a little differently from the other letters.
  • Show that q almost never stands alone. Say "qu" as one team sound, "kw," rather than q by itself.
  • Point out that x almost always finishes a word, like in fox and box, instead of starting one.
  • Celebrate this milestone out loud: all 26 letter sounds are now known. That is a huge step.
Talk about it:
  • Which of all 26 letters still feels the newest to you?
  • What sound do q and u make together?
  • Where does the x sound usually show up in a word, the start or the end?

Mastery looks like: They say the sound for all 26 letters, including the qu team and the ending x sound, and blend spoken sounds into words using any letters at all.

Common stumbles: Trying to say q all by itself instead of as part of the qu team; expecting x to start a word instead of finish one.
