Celebration: The "I Can Read" Ceremony

Read a favorite passage aloud for family as a celebration, reflecting on growth from letter sounds to real reading.

Look how far you have come. In week one you were saying single letter sounds out loud. Now you read whole books, sentences, and stories on your own.

Today is a celebration. Pick a favorite passage, read it proudly for your family, and take a moment to notice everything you have learned this year.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Make this feel like a real event: an announcement, a proud introduction, maybe even a small certificate or sign.
  • Ask your child to choose the passage themselves, since pride of choice matters today.
  • Look back together at how the year started, from single letter sounds to full sentences and books.
  • Celebrate warmly and specifically, naming real skills gained rather than only saying good job.
Talk about it:
  • What could you not do with reading back in week one that you can do now?
  • What was your favorite book or story from this whole year?
  • What kind of book do you want to read next?

Mastery looks like: They read a chosen passage aloud with confidence for a real audience and can name specific reading skills gained across the year.

Common stumbles: Undervaluing real growth by comparing only to a much older or more advanced reader instead of to their own starting point.
