Reading a Whole Decodable Book

Read an entire short decodable book from cover to cover using known sounds and sight words.

Time for a whole book, not just a page. A decodable book only uses words you can already read, so no guessing is needed anywhere inside it.

Look at the cover first and guess what the book might be about. Then read it start to finish, sounding out anything slow along the way.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Choose a decodable book that matches the sounds and sight words learned so far this year.
  • Let your child read most of the book independently, stepping in only when truly stuck.
  • Read it a second time right away, since a familiar book always gets smoother the second time through.
  • Celebrate finishing a whole book cover to cover. That is a real milestone.
Talk about it:
  • What happened in the book you read?
  • Was there a word that took extra time to sound out?
  • Did the second read feel smoother than the first?

Mastery looks like: They read an entire short decodable book with good accuracy and can describe what it was about.

Common stumbles: Guessing at a word from the picture instead of sounding it out; losing interest partway through instead of finishing the whole book.
