Checkpoint: Any CVC Word and 25 Sight Words

Read CVC words across all five short vowels and recognize the sight and heart words learned so far, without hints.

Big checkpoint week. By now you can read words with any of the five short vowels, plus about 25 words you just know by sight: heart words like the and see, and sight words like to and go.

Read everything cold today, no hints first. This shows exactly how far your reading has come since the very first letter sound.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Mix words from all five vowels together so nothing can be guessed from a pattern.
  • Add in a handful of sight and heart words from the last several weeks in the very same round.
  • Note any word or word type that still needs a hint, and plan a little extra practice on exactly that.
  • Keep this checkpoint warm and celebratory. This covers half a year of real growth.
Talk about it:
  • Which vowel sound feels the most automatic to you now?
  • Which sight word still needs a little more practice?
  • How does reading feel now compared to the very first week of school?

Mastery looks like: They read CVC words across all five short vowels and recognize the sight and heart words learned so far, accurately and without hints.

Common stumbles: Needing a hint on a word type practiced for many weeks; slowing down on sight words instead of reading them instantly.
