Sight Words: To, And, Is, My

Recognize the sight words to, and, is, and my instantly, adding to the heart words already known.

Four more small words to learn by sight this week: to, and, is, and my. These show up in almost every sentence you will ever read.

Some of these you could sound out a little, like is. Others are easier to just know by looking, like my. Either way, the goal is instant.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Flash each word for a second or two so the answer becomes instant, not sounded out slowly.
  • Point out that and can actually be blended, a, n, d, which makes it a little easier than a true heart word.
  • Mix these four new words with the, a, I, and see from a few weeks back for a quick daily review.
  • Use each word in a real spoken sentence together so the meaning, not just the sound, sticks.
Talk about it:
  • Which of these four words did you already sort of know?
  • Can and be sounded out, or does it need to be memorized?
  • Can you use my in a sentence about something that belongs to you?

Mastery looks like: They recognize to, and, is, and my instantly, without pausing to sound each one out.

Common stumbles: Sounding out and very slowly instead of reading it as one quick word; mixing up is with it since the two words look similar.
