Checkpoint: Any Short-A or Short-I Word, Cold

Read short-a and short-i CVC words and the four heart words accurately, without hints.

Checkpoint week! No new words today, just a chance to show what you can already read. Short a words, short i words, and your four heart words, all mixed together.

Read each one cold, meaning without any hint first. If something trips you up, that just tells us what to practice a little more.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Let your child try each word without any hint first, and only step in after a real attempt.
  • Mix short a, short i, and the heart words together in one list so nothing can be guessed from a pattern.
  • Note any word that needed a hint so you know exactly what to review before moving on.
  • Keep this warm and encouraging. It is a snapshot of growth, not a pass-or-fail test.
Talk about it:
  • Which words felt completely automatic today?
  • Was a short-a word or a short-i word trickier for you?
  • Which heart word still needs a little more practice?

Mastery looks like: They read short-a words, short-i words, and the four heart words accurately in mixed order, without hints.

Common stumbles: Guessing a word from its first letter instead of reading the whole thing; needing a hint on a heart word that should be automatic by now.
