Heart Words: The, A, I, See

Recognize the, a, I, and see instantly by sight, without sounding them out letter by letter.

Some small words do not follow the sounding-out rules very well. You already know the and a from the first story. Today you learn them for keeps, plus two new ones: I and see.

These are called heart words, because you learn to know them by heart, the way you know a friend right away. I is just one letter that stands for a whole word. See has a double e you have not learned yet, but you will read it anyway.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Say plainly that heart words are memorized because the regular sounding-out rules do not fully work on them yet, not because they matter more than other words.
  • Flash each heart word for one or two seconds at a time so your child answers instantly, without sounding it out.
  • Point out that the and a already feel familiar from the very first story a few weeks back.
  • Practice all four heart words together every day this week in short, quick bursts.
Talk about it:
  • Why can heart words not always be sounded out the regular way?
  • Which of the four heart words felt the most familiar already?
  • Can you use the word I in a whole sentence out loud?

Mastery looks like: They recognize the, a, I, and see instantly by sight in any order, without pausing to sound them out.

Common stumbles: Trying to sound out a heart word letter by letter instead of recognizing it instantly; forgetting a heart word learned days ago without daily practice.
