Count to 20 and write your numbers

Count aloud from 1 to 20 and correctly write the numerals 0 through 5.

You already count to 10 like a pro. Now it is time to go further: 11, 12, 13, all the way to 20. The teen numbers can feel tricky, so say them slowly.

Numbers are not just said out loud. They are also written. This week you write 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5. Start at the top of each number and go slowly.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Practice counting to 20 daily. The teens (13-19) are the trickiest part.
  • Model writing each numeral slowly first. Say the strokes out loud: down, then curve.
  • Let your child trace numbers with a finger in sand or shaving cream before pencil and paper.
  • Praise effort on wobbly numbers. Neatness comes later; direction and shape come first.
Talk about it:
  • Which numbers between 11 and 20 feel tricky to say?
  • Which number is your favorite to write?
  • Can you find the number 5 written somewhere in our house?

Mastery looks like: They count aloud to 20 without skipping a number and write 0 through 5 recognizably, in the correct direction.

Common stumbles: Skipping or reordering teen numbers, such as saying 16, 17, 19; writing numerals backward, which is very normal at this age.
