Touch and count to 15

Count up to 15 real objects by touching or moving each one exactly once, saying one number per object.

When you count objects, touch each one one time. Say one number for each touch. Do not skip. Do not touch twice.

This is called one-to-one counting. It is the most important counting rule. Line up your objects in a row so it is easy to keep track.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Line up objects in a row first. Counting a messy pile is much harder.
  • Have your child physically move or touch each object as they count it.
  • If they lose count, that is normal. Start the row over together, no big deal.
  • Use anything countable: cereal, socks, toy cars, steps on the stairs.
Talk about it:
  • Why do we touch each thing only once?
  • What happens if you count an object twice?
  • What was the biggest pile you counted today?

Mastery looks like: They count up to 15 real objects, touching each one exactly once, and land on the correct total.

Common stumbles: Saying two number words while touching one object; counting an object twice; losing their place in a messy pile.
