Count to 100 by tens, with confidence

Count fluently by tens to 100 and use that skill to quickly count large groups organized into tens.

You have practiced counting by tens before. This week, make it fast and confident, all the way to 100.

Counting by tens is a real tool. If you organize a big pile into groups of ten, you can count the whole pile fast just by skip counting.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Organize a big pile (40 to 100 small objects) into groups of exactly ten, then skip count the groups.
  • Praise the speed. That is the whole point of skip counting by tens.
  • Practice saying the sequence smoothly, without pausing to think between numbers.
  • Connect back to place value: each ten they count is really one group of ten ones.
Talk about it:
  • How does grouping into tens make counting a big pile faster?
  • Can you count by tens to 100 without any pauses?
  • How many groups of ten are in 100?

Mastery looks like: They count by tens to 100 fluently and use ten-groups to quickly count a large pile of objects.

Common stumbles: Pausing or losing the sequence between 70 and 100; miscounting the number of ten-groups in a pile.
