Checkpoint: teens and make-ten pairs

Demonstrate understanding of teen numbers as ten plus ones and fluently find make-ten pairs.

This checkpoint brings together two big ideas: every teen number is ten plus some more ones, and every number up to 10 has a partner that makes exactly 10.

Both ideas use the same superstar number: ten. Ten is the hero of this whole unit.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Mix both skills in the same session so your child sees how they both use ten.
  • Use a ten-frame for the teen numbers and fingers for the make-ten pairs.
  • This is a proud milestone. Ten is now a true tool, not just a number.
  • Note any pair or teen number that still needs a little more practice.
Talk about it:
  • How are teen numbers and make-ten pairs both about the number ten?
  • Which is easier for you, building a teen number or finding a make-ten pair?
  • What is your favorite fact about the number ten so far?

Mastery looks like: They express any teen number as ten plus ones and quickly find make-ten partners for numbers 0 through 10.

Common stumbles: Mixing up the two skills; forgetting a teen number always starts with a full ten, not a partial group.
