Statistics: scatter plots and correlation — Homework

Classify patterns and correlations.

  1. 1.Data (0,10), (1,13), (2,16), (3,19) - find the slope (rate) connecting them.
  2. 2.Classify the correlation: as study time goes up, errors go down.
  3. 3.y-values 5, 10, 20, 40 for x = 0,1,2,3 - linear, quadratic, or exponential?
  4. 4.y-values 0, 3, 8, 15, 24 for x = 1,2,3,4,5 - check the pattern of differences. Linear or not?
  5. 5.Two variables are strongly correlated. Does that prove one causes the other?
  6. 6.A scatter plot of (temperature, ice cream sales) slopes upward. Someone claims "hot weather causes people to buy ice cream." Is this correlation or causation, and is the claim reasonable?
