Point of View: What We Are Shown — Homework

Reread the opening two pages of chapter one, paying attention to what the narrator tells us that Buck himself could never know.

  1. 1.Name one piece of information the narrator gives readers that Buck never understands.
  2. 2.Does the narration ever enter a human character's thoughts directly? What effect does that have on the reader's sympathy?
  3. 3.Name the literary term for when the audience knows something a character does not.
  4. 4.Explain why not understanding the reasons behind his own suffering might make Buck seem MORE sympathetic to a reader, not less.
  5. 5.In four to six sentences, describe a movie or show you know that uses a similar gap between what the audience knows and what the main character knows.
