Independently apply annotation, theme-from-response, objective summary, figurative language, structure awareness, and point of view to one new passage as a combined checkpoint.
This week is a checkpoint -- not a test to fear, but a chance to show everything from the last eight weeks working together on one passage: your five annotation marks, finding theme through a character response, writing an objective summary, spotting figurative language, noticing structure, and identifying point of view.
Real reading does not use these skills one at a time -- a strong reader runs all of them at once, almost without noticing. This checkpoint is where that starts to happen.
Mastery looks like: They independently apply at least five of the six skills accurately to a new passage without step-by-step prompting.
Common stumbles: Trying to do all six skills in one single read instead of allowing a couple of passes, as practiced in Week 7.
