Checkpoint: decimal fluency

Demonstrate fluent addition and subtraction of decimals and explain reasoning about place value, comparing, and rounding.

This week pulls together the whole decimal unit: place value, comparing, rounding, adding, and subtracting. Fluent means you can do it accurately without re-explaining every step to yourself.

A good habit before any checkpoint: estimate first, solve carefully, then check your exact answer against your estimate.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • Time a short mixed set gently (add, subtract, compare, round) to see what is truly automatic versus still effortful.
  • Insist on the estimate-first habit here -- it catches decimal-point slips before they become "the answer."
  • Reteach only the specific piece that is shaky rather than redoing the whole unit from scratch.
  • Celebrate the fluency growth since the start of the year -- this is a real capstone moment for the unit.
Talk about it:
  • Which part of decimals -- comparing, rounding, adding, or subtracting -- still needs practice?
  • How does estimating before solving catch mistakes?
  • Why should you always round from the original number, not from an already-rounded one?

Mastery looks like: They add and subtract decimals accurately without hesitating, and can compare, round, and explain their reasoning on demand.

Common stumbles: Rounding from an already-rounded number instead of the original; misaligning decimal points under time pressure.
