Checkpoint: multiply and divide concepts explained

Checkpoint on fraction and decimal multiplication and division -- compute fluently and explain why the operation makes the number bigger or smaller.

This checkpoint checks both your computing AND your explaining. For each problem, you should be able to say not just the answer but why it makes sense that the result is bigger or smaller than where you started.

Review the big ideas: multiplying by a fraction less than 1 shrinks; dividing by a unit fraction grows, since it counts small pieces; decimal multiplication and division use whole-number facts with careful point placement.

📋 For the teacher
Teach it (10–15 min):
  • For every problem this week, require a one-sentence "why" alongside the number -- that reasoning is the actual target skill.
  • Mix all four operation types -- fraction times, fraction divide, decimal times, decimal divide -- so nothing can be answered on autopilot.
  • If an explanation is shaky even when the number is right, treat that as unfinished -- both parts matter equally this week.
  • Revisit week 21 (scaling) and week 23 (dividing a whole number by a fraction) if the "why" is still fuzzy.
Talk about it:
  • Which is harder for you to explain: why multiplying can shrink, or why dividing can grow?
  • How does decimal point placement in multiplication connect to what you know about fractions?
  • Pick one problem from today and explain your answer using only words.

Mastery looks like: They compute fraction and decimal multiplication and division accurately and can explain in their own words why each result is bigger or smaller.

Common stumbles: Giving a correct number without being able to explain why it makes sense; applying whole-number size intuition to fraction operations.
